Description
Step into an enchanted garden where phonics practice becomes a magical adventure!
In Fairy Land Garden Quest, children choose a fairy, begin at the START mushroom, and travel along sparkling fairy-dust spaces as they race toward the fairy castle hidden inside a giant rose.
But there’s a reading challenge along the way!
Each time a player lands on a space, they must sound out and read the CVC word before continuing their journey.
Designed for beginning readers, this printable CVC phonics board game provides a fun, play-based way to practice decoding, segmenting, blending, short vowels, phonemic awareness, and early reading fluency.
Instead of completing another worksheet, children practice essential phonics skills while rolling a die, moving their fairy, reading words, and trying to reach the castle.
The game includes a variety of short-vowel CVC words, along with words ending in ck, helping children recognize that c and k work together to represent the final /k/ sound.
Perfect for kindergarten, Grade 1, homeschool, phonics centers, literacy centers, intervention, tutoring, small groups, and beginning readers who benefit from hands-on learning.

CVC Reading Practice Through Play
The game includes a wide variety of short-vowel CVC words for children to decode as they travel through Fairy Land.
Short A
cat, map, fan, rag, cap, bag, dad
Short E
red, pet, hen, net, ten
Short I
pig, dig, pin, sit, lip, fit, bit, lid, bib
Short O
hop, log, top, fog, dog, hot, mop, rob
Short U
sun, bun, cup, mud, gum, run, fun, hug
Children encounter different vowel sounds throughout the game rather than practicing only one word family at a time.
This gives beginning readers repeated opportunities to retrieve, apply, blend, and decode their phonics knowledge during play.
Practice the CK Ending
The game also introduces words ending in ck, including:
- back
- pick
- rock
- neck
- sick
- pack
- sock
When children encounter these words, remind them that c and k work together at the end to spell one /k/ sound.
For example:
/d/ – /u/ – /ck/ → duck
This provides additional practice with a common spelling pattern while reinforcing segmenting and blending.
How to Play
1. Choose a Fairy
Each player chooses a fairy playing piece and places it at the START mushroom.
2. Decide Who Goes First
Each player rolls the die. The player with the highest number goes first. Play then continues clockwise.
3. Roll & Move
Roll the die and move your fairy forward the corresponding number of glowing fairy-dust spaces.
4. Read the Word
Read the CVC word on the space where your fairy lands.
Encourage children to sound out the word before blending it together.
For example:
/c/ – /a/ – /t/ → cat
5. Stay on Your Space
If the player reads the word correctly, their fairy stays on that space.
If a child needs help, encourage them to identify each sound and blend the word together.
For a more challenging version, a player who reads the word incorrectly returns to the space where they began that turn.
6. Reach the Fairy Castle!
The first fairy to reach the castle inside the giant rose wins!
An exact roll is not required to finish the game.
Easier Play for Beginning Readers
Fairy Land Garden Quest can be adapted for children who are just beginning to blend sounds.
Allow children to:
- Say each sound slowly
- Blend the word with adult support
- Repeat the word after hearing it modeled
- Ask another player for help
- Stay on their space even when they need assistance
The goal at this stage is to build confidence with decoding and blending, rather than making children feel discouraged while they are learning.
Try Cooperative Play
Instead of racing against one another, have everyone work together to help all the fairies reach the castle.
This creates a supportive way to practice phonics while keeping the game engaging.
Ready for a Challenge?
Children who can already decode the words independently can complete an additional phonics or language challenge after reading.
Ask them to:
- Say the individual sounds
- Identify the beginning sound
- Identify the middle vowel
- Identify the ending sound
- Segment the entire word
- Use the word in a sentence
- Think of a rhyming word
- Find another word with the same middle vowel sound
- Change one sound to create a new word
- Explain the meaning of the word
These options make it easy to use the same board game with children at different stages of early reading development.

Printing & Preparation
For best results:

- Print the board as tiles if you want to create a larger game board
- Print fairy playing pieces on white cardstock
- Print the included die template on cardstock or use a standard die
- Cut the fairy pieces along the outer cutting lines
- Assemble the standees and die before playing
- Laminate the board and playing pieces for repeated use
You’ll also need scissors and glue or clear tape for assembling the pieces.
Extend the Learning
Turn every fairy-dust space into a mini phonics lesson!
After a child reads a word such as cat, ask:
- What sound do you hear at the beginning?
- What is the middle vowel?
- What sound do you hear at the end?
- Can you say each sound separately?
- What would cat become if we changed /c/ to /h/?
- Can you think of a word that rhymes with cat?
For ck words, point out that c and k work together at the end to spell one /k/ sound.
Compare words such as:
back, pick, rock, neck, sock
Keep the questions appropriate for each child’s reading level so the activity continues to feel like an exciting journey rather than a test.
Teacher Tip
Choose just one extra phonics question to focus on during each game.
For example, during one round, ask children to identify the middle vowel after reading each word. During another game, focus on segmenting.
This provides targeted phonics practice without slowing down the game or taking away from the fun.
