Put on your chef’s hat and get ready for a delicious phonics adventure! This colorful, interactive board game transforms letter sounds, sound blending, rhyming, and phonemic awareness into a playful restaurant-themed learning experience.
Children roll the die, move their chef pawns around the café, collect letter cards, create words, and complete entertaining challenges as they race to become the Master Chef!

Additional materials needed: One standard die, scissors, and optional cardstock or laminating supplies.
🍳 How to Play Word Café
The goal is simple: Be the first chef to reach MASTER CHEF!
Step 1 – Set Up Your Café
Place the game board in the center of the playing area.
Shuffle the Consonant Cards, Vowel Cards, Kitchen Challenge Cards, and Review Cards separately.
Each player chooses a chef pawn and places it on START.
Step 2 – Roll and Move
Players take turns rolling the die and moving along the colorful pathway.
Each space has a different activity!
👨🍳 COOK!
Draw two consonant cards and one vowel card.
Say each letter sound, then rearrange the letters to create a word.
For example:
c + a + t = cat
m + a + p = map
If the letters do not create a familiar word, that’s okay! Children still practice recognizing sounds and blending them together.
After completing the activity, draw a Customer Review Card.
⭐ CHEF’S CHOICE
It’s your turn to choose!
Select any two consonant cards and one vowel card.
Say the sounds, rearrange the letters, and create a word.
After completing the challenge, draw a Customer Review Card.
🥣 KITCHEN CHALLENGE
Draw a Kitchen Challenge Card and complete the activity.
You might be asked to:
- Identify a beginning sound
- Recognize an ending sound
- Say a short vowel sound
- Blend three sounds together
- Make a silly word
- Clap the sounds in a word
- Think of a rhyming word
- Name an animal or food beginning with a particular sound
- Create a sentence
When the challenge is complete, your turn ends.

Every great chef needs customer feedback!
After completing a COOK! or CHEF’S CHOICE activity, players draw a Customer Review Card.
Some customers love your cooking, while others might think the soup is cold or the food is too salty!
