Help young learners take their first exciting steps toward reading with Critter Corner’s Short Vowel Sounds – A Hands-On Phonics Activity Pack!
This colorful, interactive phonics resource helps children recognize short vowel sounds, combine letters, and develop early decoding skills through hands-on learning.
Instead of simply looking at letters on a worksheet, children physically move letter cards, connect sounds, and discover how individual sounds come together to form words!

🔤 Meet the Five Vowels!
Children are introduced to the five vowels through colorful posters featuring short and long vowel examples.
A – Alligator: apple, ant, cat, ape
E – Elephant: egg, elf, hen, eagle
I – Iguana: pig, insect, igloo, ice
O – Otter: octopus, owl, orange, boat
U – Unicorn: umbrella, duck, cub, ukulele
Each vowel has a matching teaching page that focuses on its short vowel sound, with realistic mouth photographs, pronunciation guidance, and practice ideas.
These visuals help children see, hear, and produce the sounds before beginning blending activities.
📚 A Step-by-Step Approach to Blending
This resource follows a carefully structured learning sequence to help children develop confidence before moving to more challenging word-building activities.
Step 1 – Learn VC Sounds First
Children begin by blending a vowel and consonant together.
Examples:
a + t = at
a + n = an
a + p = ap
a + m = am
This helps children recognize how two individual sounds combine into one spoken unit.
Step 2 – Add a Beginning Sound
Once children are comfortable reading VC combinations, introduce a movable consonant card.
Examples:
c + at = cat
m + ap = map
p + an = pan
Children say the beginning sound, read the VC combination, and blend them together.
Step 3 – Say It, Move It, Blend It!
Encourage children to physically move the consonant card toward the VC card as they blend.
b + am = bam
Even when the result is a silly word, children are still practicing valuable decoding skills!
Step 4 – Reverse the Process
Once children understand beginning consonants, introduce CV combinations and add an ending sound.
Examples:
ca + t = cat
ca + p = cap
ca + n = can
This provides another way for children to explore how sounds combine to form words.
🎲 Why Practice Real and Silly Words?
Not every letter combination creates a familiar word — and that’s part of the learning!
When children encounter unfamiliar combinations, they must rely on their developing phonics skills rather than recognizing a memorized word.
For example:
b + am = bam
The same blending skills can later help children read unfamiliar words.
Practicing real and silly words encourages children to:
- Listen carefully to individual sounds
- Blend sounds rather than guess
- Develop flexible decoding skills
- Gain confidence with unfamiliar combinations
- Understand that letters work together to create spoken words
The goal is not how many words children know — it is helping them become confident at linking sounds together to read!
🐾 A Special Note About Q and Qu
The activity pack includes a dedicated teaching guide explaining why the letter Q is different from most consonants.
Children learn that Q is usually followed by U in English words and that the combination Qu commonly represents the /kw/ sound.
The guide offers two approaches:
Option 1 – Practice Q on Its Own
Introduce Q individually for letter recognition and sound awareness.
Option 2 – Teach Qu Together
Introduce Qu as a common letter combination, using examples such as quack and quilt.
The guide also discusses exceptions and explains why Q is not included as a regular ending-sound card in this activity.

🖨️ Printing & Preparation
This resource is a digital PDF printable, designed for standard A4 paper.
Printing Instructions:
- Print on A4 paper at 100% / Actual Size.
- For stronger, longer-lasting pieces, print on cardstock or heavier paper.
- Laminate the letter and sound cards if desired.
- Carefully cut out the cards along their individual borders.
- Organize the cards into separate sets for easy classroom or home use.
Important Cutting Tip!
Because the pages were individually designed and arranged, the cutting lines may not align perfectly from one page to another.
Although stacking pages and using a paper cutter may seem faster, we recommend cutting one sheet at a time to avoid accidentally cutting through the cards.
If laminated, leave a small sealed border around each piece to help prevent peeling.
