Each activity page features two addition problems, with plenty of room for children to count, place their apple cutouts, and work out their answers.

🍎 What Is Addition?

Addition is one of the first important mathematical concepts children learn.

This activity introduces addition by showing children how to put two groups together and find the total.

For example:

🍎🍎🍎 + 🍎🍎 = 5 apples

Three apples and two more apples make five apples altogether!

Children also learn to recognize two important mathematical symbols:

Plus (+) – Means to add or put together.

Equals (=) – Means the total or how many altogether.

By using colorful pictures and movable apple cutouts, children begin to connect what they see and count with the mathematical symbols they will use as their skills develop.

🎲 How to Play – Count and Add!

Step 1 – Cut Out the Apples ✂️

Print the apple cutout page and carefully cut along the dashed borders.

These apples will become your child’s hands-on counting pieces.

Step 2 – Count the First Group 🔢

Choose an addition problem.

Ask your child to count the apples in the first group.

Encourage them to point to each apple while counting aloud.

Step 3 – Count the Second Group 🍎

Now count the apples in the second group.

Children can use the apple cutouts to represent each quantity and see the two groups separately.

Step 4 – Put the Groups Together ➕

Move the apple cutouts together and count how many apples there are altogether.

This helps children understand that addition combines quantities to make a total.

Step 5 – Find and Record the Answer ✏️

Ask:

“How many apples do we have altogether?”

Children can write the total in the answer box or use the apple cutouts to show their answer.

Repeat with the remaining addition problems!

🌟 Two Ways to Learn!

🍎 Guided Addition Activities

The 14 guided problems feature groups of apples already arranged into addition equations.

Children count the apples on each side of the plus sign, combine the quantities, and determine the total.

These activities are ideal for children just beginning to understand addition.

🎨 Create Your Own Addition!

Once children feel more confident, they can try the two blank addition challenges.

Using the printable apples, children create their own equations by placing different numbers of apples on either side of the plus sign.

For example:

2 + 3 = 5

4 + 1 = 5

3 + 3 = 6

Children can experiment with different combinations and discover how quantities work together.

This encourages independent thinking, problem-solving, and a deeper understanding of addition.
