Petra the Pterodactyl

Hi there, sky explorer!

Petra's First Flight - a sky explorer finding her wings!

I'm Petra the Pterodactyl, and I'm SO excited to be your pen pal! Guess what? I just had my very first flight, and it was amazing - the wind in my wings, the earth far below, and the clouds all around me. I couldn't wait to write to you and tell you all about it!

I'm a pterosaur - that's a flying reptile, not technically a dinosaur, but I lived in the same time as the dinosaurs. My wings are made from a skin membrane stretched from my long fourth finger down to my body, kind of like a bat! I have a long beak, sharp eyes, and a pointy crest on my head to help me steer in the wind.

Pterodactyl fun facts: My wingspan can be up to 3-4 feet (some cousins like Quetzalcoatlus were as big as small planes!). I love eating fish - I swoop down and snatch them right from the water! I nest on rocky cliffs near the sea, where I can launch into the air easily. I'm an expert glider, using air currents to soar for hours with hardly any flapping. My favorite part of flying is feeling the sun on my wings and the thrill of leaping into the air for the first time - it takes bravery, but once I'm up, I feel like I belong in the sky. Have you ever tried something new and felt both scared and excited? You're braver than you know! I live in a world full of dinosaurs like Triceratops and T-Rex, but I spend most of my time in the skies, looking for fish, flapping with my flock, and exploring the coastline. I think you and I would be amazing flying buddies - curious, adventurous, and ready to rise above any challenge.

Thank you for being my pen pal! Remember, even when something feels hard, you can spread your wings (in your own way!) and soar.

With big wing hugs and sky-high wishes,
Your friend,
Petra the Pterodactyl
